It's Cutthroat season!

All winter we wait for it start to warm up a bit and for the salmon fry to emerge from the gravel and begin their migration out to sea. When this happens it triggers a feeding frenzy by diving ducks, gulls, herons, and most importantly Cutthroat trout!! Next to steelhead, Cutthroat trout are my favorite thing to fish and guide for, probably because of the variety of places, and methods we fly fish for them. It was a great day today, both weather and company wise, so enjoy some pics.

What's happening?

With less than a hand full of days off since the middle of July it's been a struggle to keep up with my blog so I apologize. Here's what's happening, been out chasing dinosaurs and trout. The weather has been incredible, and it's hard to believe it's September and the kids are back in school! Catching lots of big fish lately, and making lots of new friends :) Busy preparing for my trip to the steelhead "mecca" the Babine river in a week. Be sure to check back for a post about that one!! It should be a beauty!

Remote fly fishing

Got to spend a few days exploring some of the boat access only areas, and with the higher water from the snow melt things went well! Mananaged some beautifully fish on the fly rods with a great gentleman named Ian from the UK. He managed to catch 5 different species of fish including, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, dolly varden, mountain whitefish, and bull trout! Enjoy a couple of pics from the last few days!

My "Fish Finder"

Headed out on Sunday to put a couple more hours on the new Yamaha, pretty much broken in now and ready for the upcoming season! Decided to poke around for some cutthroat. I had my "fish finder" aka Sage Skaaning along. While Sage is very keen on the fly fishing, at the end of the day its all about "catching" so armed with his ultralight spinning rod he showed just how many fish I was missing in each run with my fly rod!LOL! The highlight of the day was a beautiful 2 1/2 pound dolly varden that followed his spoon all the way in and smashed at the last second! Unfortunately the slippery bugger slid back in unharmed as dad was fumbling with his new camera. Spoon of choice was an all silver Hildebrant, and for flies, the old muddler minnow got its share of takes!
Enjoy

Cutthroat fishing

Spent today chasing some cutthroat trout on the fly with my new friend Tom from Montana! The weather wasn't as nice as the weekend but it felt real fishy. There are a pile of salmon fry migrating out to sea right now and the fish are becoming a little more picky than they have been over the last few weeks. Tom still managed a few nice ones. We explored the area a bit and in the end had a great day.
Here are a few pics, enjoy.
